After making a thorough condition assessment, the conservator
determined the structure of the Southwest Pieta to be sound
and identified some surface areas in need of restoration.
In areas where layers have separated he recommends injecting
adhesive to reattach them.
He recommends filling in small holes
with an inert material. When paint is missing he recommends
repainting in a way that is visible, but only from very close
up -- so viewers and later conservators will be able to see
clearly what is original and what has been restored.
