In his sculpture, Luis Jiménez
wanted to express the sense of loss experienced by conquered
native peoples. The word "Pieta" is Italian. It
means pity, compassion, or sorrow.
The pieta image goes back thousands
of years, for example to Greek sculptures depicting a soldier
holding the body of a dead comrade. A very famous pieta was
made 500 years ago by Michelangelo. A reproduction of Michelangelo's
pieta, which shows the Virgin Mary mourning over the body
of her son, is just visible at the bottom of a collection
of images in Jiménez' drawing studio.
