Reserva Forestal Los Santos
The reserva serves as a year-round habitat for the resplendent quetzal, as well as other species like trogons and hummingbirds. The reserva gained its name from the tradition of assigning the names of saints to the first settlements of the area. This was a common practice in the region, which has gained the name in Costa Rica as the “region of the saints.” We can find villages such as Santa María, San Marcos, San Pablo, San Gerardo, among others. The area was declared a reserva forestal in November 1975 and covers an area of 62,000 hectares. Altitude ranges are between 2000 and 3000 meters at the Cerro de la Muerte.
