Melvin Fernández Jiménez

Melvin Fernández is the chief guide for the Transcendent Icon/Resplendent Quetzal project. He lives in San Gerardo de Dota where he has served for many years as both a guide and an expert photographer/videographer. This project is indebted to him for the footage (perhaps the only in existence) of the male quetzal performing its signature courtship flight. Melvin's extraordinary experiences with the quetzal have deepened his appreciation and affinity for this spectacular bird.

In this account, Melvin Fernández describes a momentous encounter he had with a resplendent quetzal that was teaching its fledgling to fly. In witnessing the fledgling's inexpert and failing attempt, the adult tried to intercept the young bird's fall by landing on Melvin’s head!
