Galería Namu

The most recent Fodor’s Costa Rica (2007) gives Galería Namu (the word means jaguar in Bribri, one of the native languages) the gold star and its top rating for a specialty store.  It is very well deserved.  Namu has the best folk art that we have come across in all of Costa Rica.  Moreover, we purchased for our project one of the ivory-nut “Tagua” figurines of a resplendent quetzal as well as two splendid balsa masks by the Brunka (also called Boruca) indigenous community of Costa Rica that also featured quetzals and other neo-tropical birds.  See examples of what we purchased at Namu below.  Namu maintains fixed, fair trade prices for its superb folk art and it genuinely supports the indigenous communities of Central America. The proprietor, Aisling, from Ireland originally, is extraordinarily knowledgeable and helpful. Namu has a fabulous  website where you will find everything you need to make a valuable visit.
