Getting Started
Think back over what you've learned about the Southwest
Pieta.
- What surprised you the most?
- What are you curious to learn
more about?
- How has your understanding
of the sculpture changed?
Check out other
art by Luis Jiménez. Read more about what Jiménez
has to say about his art and what
others think of it.
- What are some similarities in most
or all of Jiménez' sculptures? Prints?
- Does everyone value the same things
about Jiménez' work?
- Can you find two or three viewpoints
that are quite different?
Now imagine that you are living 20
years in the future, either in Albuquerque or in Tempe (or
Phoenix), Arizona. The condition of the nearby Southwest
Pieta has not been assessed for some time. You have been
asked to serve on a committee to make recommendations for
the future of the sculpture.
What to

Pieta that points out important details (subject matter,
symbols, colors, shapes, etc).
- Interpretation of what you think
the work is about.
- Explanation of several different
viewpoints about the Southwest Pieta. Identify some
factors that might have caused people to form different
opinions about its meaning or value.
