When conservators
are called in to save or protect an artwork, they begin by
thoroughly assessing its condition before they make any recommendations.
Sometimes they recommend restoring
the artwork. For example they might propose ways to repair
broken parts, fill in missing paint, or replace lost sections.
Sometimes they find ongoing damage
and recommend how to stop it or recommend how people can prevent
future damage to an artwork.
