To make a cast, the pieces of the mold
are all bolted together.
Parting wax is applied to the inside
of each section of the mold, which, once hardened is painted
with a water-soluble, poly-vinyl alcohol, so that the cast
will not stick to the mold.
Next the inside of the mold is covered
with fiberglass and a mixture of resin and catalyst.
When the cast has cured, the mold is
removed, and the seams ground off, the cast duplicates the
forms originally made in clay.
Jiménez made the eagle
as a separate, removable trapdoor. The sculpture can be bolted
securely to its pedestal from the inside before the eagle
is bolted into place.
